Purpose:

Class Representatives are parent leaders who act as a liaison between the class parents and the school maintaining a positive voice for both WaterfordSchool and Waterford families. Visibility at school events and availability to parents are essential. Class Representatives are vital to the smooth operation of the volunteer program, parent to parent mentoring program, social activities for the students and the community service efforts at Waterford.

Liaison Responsibilities:
Acts as contact point for all classroom parents—providing information, answering questions, problem solving and identifying the appropriate person to approach within the school in response to parent concerns. Class Reps gather email addresses of assigned families for ease in communication.
Meets with the Homeroom Teacher before school begins to identify parent volunteer opportunities and become familiar with the day to day classroom activities.
Attends the monthly Parents’ Association Meeting (first Wednesday of each month), August Family Brunch, September Parents’ Night and the April Faculty Night. These meetings are critical for keeping informed and they provide important visibility and availability to parents.
Hosts the Parent Reception held while students gather with their teachers during the LS Meet-Your-Class-Gathering. Parents meet in the Assembly Room to become acquainted with the Parents’ Association Board, Head of Lower School and Class Representatives. Class Reps will have the opportunity to greet and introduce themselves to parents and build relationships.
Collects the volunteer sign-up sheets from the teacher following Parents’ Night. Oversees parent participation that matches parent expertise and willingness to the school’s program needs. Encourages involvement of all parents in an equitable manner.
Contacts new families in the summer, makes arrangements to meet new families at the Family Brunch and continues regular contact throughout the year as instructed by the New Parent Mentor. See section on Parent to Parent Program.
Lends support to the Annual Giving effort under the direction of the Development Office.
Lends support to the community service efforts of the LowerSchool under the direction of the Community Service Faculty Advisor.
Hospitality Responsibilities:
Arranges simple refreshments for parent gathering after the Class Assembly.
Coordinates parent volunteers to assist with multiple-class parent gatherings following concerts. Class Reps will be contacted by Parent Gathering Coordinator.
Assists with refreshments for the monthly Parents’ Association Meeting as assigned by the Secretary.
Miscellaneous:

Teacher Appreciation and Gifts (policy in the Parents’ Handbook)—Please take the leadership in guiding parents to express thanks appropriately, such as notes from their children, a favorite book given to the library in their name, homemade treats, or a donation to the Faculty Scholarship. Class Representatives are responsible for organizing a simple end-of-year class gift for the teacher. The most meaningful gifts involve the children.

Parent Contacts—Each phone call or email should be treated as an opportunity to inquire about the year, the student, and the overall experience, offering encouragement and assistance in a positive and constructive manner.

Other Duties as Assigned—Willingness to be flexible with other duties as assigned by the teacher or the Class Representative Coordinator if necessary.
