Overview of Emergency Plans and Safety Procedures at Waterford

Waterford School has a detailed emergency plan in place in the event of a natural disaster or other unforeseen event such as an intruder. This is a brief overview of those plans. If you would like more information regarding these procedures, please contact Lee Bromley.

In case of a large scale emergency, earthquake, fire, flood, major storm etc., the school will maintain responsibility for students until they are released to their parents. To ensure student safety and whereabouts, students will be checked out in an orderly manner to parents through an EmergencyCenter in the Main Office or in another designated location. Signs direct parents to student check-out areas.
Parents are notified of school closures via a professional automated phone messaging system, Notify Quick . In addition, an emergency message that gives information to parents will be recorded by Head of School on the main school phone line.
Lower School classrooms have emergency buckets that include basic first aid supplies, a flashlight, water and snacks. Emergency buckets for Middle and Upper School students are located in the Humanities 611 and the basement of the 800 Building. In the unlikely event that some students will remain at the school overnight, faculty will remain with them. Food reserves from the dining hall would be accessed if necessary.
Each classroom has an evacuation flip-chart plan and map posted near the doorway. Students will be moved by class to a safe building/area until released to parents. Inter-school communication will be conducted via the school intercom system, radios and designated faculty runners.
If necessary, a First Aid Station will be established in the 800 Building where First Aid supplies are stored. Lee Bromley is a Registered Nurse. Additional faculty members are trained in basic First Aid and CPR. Administration will contact and coordinate with paramedics and local law enforcement.
Please update student emergency forms if changes to medical history, medications and/or phone numbers occur during the school year.
Fire drills and earthquake drills are conducted with the students each year.
All doors to the Lower School Building are automatically locked from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm and then after 4:00 pm. Access to the Lower Schools during those hours is through the Lower School Office. All visitors, including parents, will be asked to sign in and wear an identifying badge.
