Middle School Extracurricular Activities

Community Service
Advisor: Lisa Rands
Classes VI-VIII

Middle School Community Service is designed to give students the opportunity to serve and to help them develop a lifelong habit of giving service to others. The program builds on the foundation set in Lower School and provides a bridge to Upper School Community Service. Activities are generally held once a month, either during lunchtime or after school, and last about an hour. Past activities have included putting on a concert for the residents of an assisted-living center, tying fleece blankets for refugees, collecting canned food for the Utah Food Bank, and making interactive Valentines for children at Primary Children’s Hospital. Upcoming Community Service activities are published in Waterford Words and announced at Middle School assemblies. All Middle School students are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Student Government
Advisors: Lisa Rands
Class VIII

The goal of Middle School Student Government is to give students the opportunity to 1) gain leadership skills, 2) serve the Waterford and broad community by carrying out Middle School activities, and 3) be positive peer role models.

The Middle School Student Government council is made up of 5 Class VIII students. Elections are held in April. Current class VII must submit an application and be approved by the MS Dean to be eligible to run for election. Students give speeches in MS Assembly and are then elected by their peers.

Elected officers attend weekly student government planning meetings, conduct assemblies, and manage social and community service activities. In addition, they carry out other objectives and goals of the MS program as outlined by the Student Government advisors.

The Middle School Officers for 2007 – 08 are:

Theatre – Fall Play
Advisor: Javen Tanner
Classes VI-X

The purpose of the Waterford School plays is to apply the principles, concepts, and exercises taught in the theatre classes; to bridge the gap between classwork and performance. We also aim to contribute high quality theatrical productions to the overall experience at the Waterford School. We will work mainly with the great plays and playwrights, classical and modern. Classes VI – X may audition for the Fall Play. Students can expect to spend six weeks working on a given play, rehearsing for two hours after school on weekdays. We do have occasional Saturday rehearsals, as well.
