LEARNING AT WATERFORD

WATERFORD IS A BEGINNING. Here, learning well is a prelude to learning throughout life, and it animates action. In learning about others -- what they did, what they cared about, why they chose what they did -- a child starts to understand beyond the scope of personal experience. In wide-ranging study, a child discerns an indebtedness to those who have gone before. In discovery, the child's path connects with the adult's, and intersects with the paths of those who also are asking bold questions. The child, learning becomes a citizen of the twenty-first century, and through family, profession and personal enterprise influences the world.

Learning at Waterford is simple. It happens when accompanied by other students who are eager to learn and becoming more adept with practice. It happens in the company of teachers who share their passions for the subject and teach so that students learn well. It happens when reaching across centuries and geographical divides to become a peer with those whose ideas and works give substance to the curriculum. It happens when pursuing learning to discover truth and then living it.

Life within the Waterford village is complicated. It is busy and many-leveled, and centered by what one is learning. Learning to use one's mind and develop one's talents settles a student in academics, with significant place provided for the arts and academics. The scope of learning is broad, the expectation high, and students earn confidence as they turn effort into achievement. Each discipline and activity has its distinct purpose; they are brought together in the minds and dreams and lives of the student.
