College Counseling Notes

We are pleased with the early college admission results from colleges. Students who applied under early admission programs in November have heard whether they were admitted, deferred, or denied from their colleges, which were often their first choice colleges. About 25% of the Senior class applied early, which is a reasonable amount, given that there are often good reasons not to apply early to colleges, even if it is not a binding decision. 70% of those that applied early were admitted, and 67% of those that applied to Ivy League or other top-50 most competitive colleges were admitted. We are proud of this years’ Senior class already for their talent, hard work, and strong preparation for the most rigorous colleges.

February and March are great times for Class XI students and parents to meet with their college counselor. Call or email your college counselor to arrange a meeting. In spring meetings with Juniors, we discuss testing schedules—when students will plan to take the ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests—and can help them choose the dates that make the most sense for them. We also begin the process of researching colleges, and show students some of the best ways to research colleges. We build on the decision-making and college criteria workshops we did last fall, and encourage students to put together a realistic list of colleges of interest; it’s also a good time to ask questions as you embark on the college application process in earnest.

Testing for Class XI:

We encourage students to take at least one of the tests (ACT or SAT) twice, but don’t take them more than twice. For the SAT (or SAT II Subject Tests), especially, you want to be well prepared to do your best even the first time you take it, as when the SAT reports your scores to the colleges you choose, the will see every SAT score you have taken in high school.

Mrs. Rauscher’s ACT and SAT Tactics classes (geared toward Class XI Students, who will be taking the tests this spring)

: These are bare-bones test tactics classes where students will discuss tactics for each section of the test, do a few example exercises, and then practice more problems and do more "workouts" on their own.

Held Tuesdays at lunch, 11:30-12:12, in Room 702. ACT Tactics Class costs $30, which covers the cost of the 2008 Kaplan ACT Premier Program Book, and $30 for the 2008 Kaplan SAT Premier Program Book. (Anyone is welcome to sit in on my class and receive a tactics and "homework" worksheet at no cost.)
